  1. Thank you for the insight. But my questions are in 3 forms
    1. Which breed of goat is advisable to start with when one is venturing into goat farming..

    2. What is the proper or adequate feed one can give his goats.

    3. Do you start counting from the day a goat gives birth to get or know exactly when the goat is on heat? The 21 days starts right from giving birth or?

    1. Thank you for your questions regarding starting a goat farming venture in Ghana. I’m glad you found the information insightful. Now, let’s address your queries one by one:

When venturing into goat farming, it is advisable to start with breeds that are well-suited to the local climate, have good adaptability, and exhibit desirable traits for meat or milk production. In Ghana, some popular goat breeds for farming include the West African Dwarf (WAD) and the Saneen breed.
The WAD goats are known for their resilience and adaptability to harsh environments, while the Saneen breed is renowned for its high milk production. It’s important to research and consult with local experts to determine the breed that aligns best with your specific farming goals and environmental conditions.

Providing proper and adequate feed is crucial for the health and productivity of your goats. Goats are generally browsers and prefer a varied diet that includes grazing on grass, shrubs, and leaves. Additionally, they require a balanced diet consisting of roughage (such as hay or forage) and concentrates (grains or commercially formulated goat feed). It is essential to provide a constant supply of fresh water, as goats need to stay hydrated. Consult with local veterinary professionals or experienced goat farmers to get specific recommendations on feed and nutritional requirements based on the breed and age of your goats.

When determining the heat cycle of a female goat (known as estrus or being “on heat”), the 21-day period does not start immediately after giving birth, it starts anywhere from 2 months or more after birth. The heat cycle refers to the period when a goat is receptive to mating.
Typically, the estrus cycle in goats lasts around 21 days, but it may vary slightly among individuals. It is advisable to monitor the behavior and physical signs of your goats to identify when they are in heat. Common signs include restlessness, increased vocalization, tail wagging, and swelling of the vulva. Keeping accurate records of breeding and observing your goats’ behaviors can help you determine the best time for mating.

I hope this helps clarify your questions. If you have any further inquiries or need additional guidance, feel free to ask. Good luck with your goat farming endeavor!
